Hi,
To change your son's payee, you will have to make an appointment with your local SSA office. The process tends to go more smoothly when all parties involved are present at the meeting. If you have a new representative payee in mind, if possible, they should be there.

I've been pay E several years now. And the applicant has no respect for me and yells and fights and gets in trouble with the law and causes me so much pain and suffering and stress anxiety and depression but what am I to do about giving it up

That is an unfortunate situation to be in. To switch payee usually requires an appointment at the SSA office. Because they have a representative payee, the SSA has determined that they do not have the ability to watch over the money themselves. It may be helpful for you to have another potential payee in mind.

Hi There,
You can do so at an SSA office (make an appointment first by calling 1-800-772-1213!). I'd be bring your Social Security card and a picture ID. If you have someone in mind to be the new payee, have them come as well with their Social Security card and ID. If not, the SSA can assign someone. Your son may also need to go as well if possible.

Hi,
If you would like to stop being a representative payee, you will have to contact the SSA office. The best way to do that is to bring in all parties involved, but that is not always possible. The SSA assigns a payee because they believe that that individual should not be taking care of their own money. If that status has not changed, then a new payee will be assigned.
Can I close out his checking account that is in my name and give him the money. Because I no longer want to be his payee

Since he has a representative payee, the SSA has decided that it would be better if someone else was to handle the money. To switch payees you will have to make an appointment with your local SSA office. This would be best if both parties are there. If the determination is made that he is unable to care for his own money, there will be a new payee assigned.

If you cannot find a family member or close friend to be your payee then a qualified organization may act as a Social Security Representative Payee.
