Should special needs trust be spent and closed for SSI to move forward? California

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

After 12 months, SSI eligibility has been granted to a 19 year-old but is pending starting payments due to Special needs trust(SNT) with 1500.00 funded by parents. Caseworker sent special needs trusts and bank statement showing funds to the regional department for a decision if funds were to being included assets ( even though they are not over the $2000 limit). It is now 15 months waiting, and multiple trips to the local SS office including speaking to a senior worker who spoke with a supervisor. Latest ss response says regional has not responded regarding if SNT $1500 is to be considered resource. Is it best to just close this SNT? Thoughts/opinions?
Thank you.

Hi there,
I would not close your child's special need's trust until you receive some information from your local SSA office, they would be able to give you the information that you would need to make the most informed decision.
