Buying a car on SSI

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

My truck is falling apart. It's leaking oil and has other issues as well. I want to user my backpay to buy a used vehicle, but I can't sell mine until I have something else to drive. If I buy a car, that will put me over the $2,000 asset limit. But I can't even look for a car if I sell mine first. How do I go about doing this?

Thanks.

I draw s.s.i. and am in need of a car. Can the social security administration help me with getting a car? I am lost on how to do this.

We own a junker car. 2002 Saturn SL1. It's our only vehicle.
We'd like to buy a newer car, SUV, but don't want to jeopardize my SSID.

Hi Ivan,

You are able to purchase a car with your SSI funds. A single car generally does not count against your total assets. Just make sure that the purchase is well documented. If you have any other questions, you can always give your local SSA office a call and they can help you with the more specific details.

Hi,

You are able to buy are car while remaining on SSI benefits and it will generally not jeopardize your benefits. Make sure that you keep documentation of all of the transactions. If you are still concerned, I would recommend contacting your local SSA office. If this is your only vehicle, and it is necessary you should be alright.

I have a question. My brother is currently on SSI and I want to gift him a car so that he can use to get around to his doctors appointments. Will be gifting a car to him affect his SSI benefits? Is there a limit for the car value? I want to make sure to get him a good reliable car.

Hi Jackie,

I have copied in a link from the SSA that describes their definition of a gift and how it will affect benefits.

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0500830520

One of the examples that they use is a car and it looks like it is not counted as income assuming that is his only car. Feel free to call your local SSA office if you would like some more information.
