About Fremont, California

Located in the San Francisco Bay area, Fremont was formed when Centerville, Irvington, Warm Springs, Niles, and Mission San Jose merged in 1956. It is named for John Charles Fremont, who was famous as a military officer and explorer and who was one of the first U.S. Senators elected by the new state of California in 1850. Mission San Jose was the first non-native settlement in the area, having been founded in 1797. Today Fremont’s population numbers a little over 218,000.

The area’s economy has been fueled by a variety of enterprises. For a brief period from 1912 to 1916, Niles was the center of the California motion picture industry. In the 1950s and 1960s, General Motors established an automotive assembly plant in Warm Springs and in the 1980s, Toyota and General Motors opened a joint assembly plant that operated until 2010, when it was bought by Tesla to manufacture electric cars. Solar panel manufacture will begin in the area in the near future, and the high-tech industry has had a presence since the 1980s.

The city’s largest employers are its hospital, the local school district, and locally-based corporations such as Boston Scientific, Seagate, Western Digital, AXT, Inc., Lam Research, Office Depot, and Oplink Communications.

Among the schools, colleges, and universities located in Fremont are Ohlone College and a satellite campus for the University of California, Berkley as well as the University of Phoenix, Northwestern Polytechnic University, DeVry University, the California School for the Deaf and the California School for the Blind.
