Is it possible to change the account my kids' benefits are deposited into? Its in my ex wifes bank account now and she reports as earned income for her on her taxes each year, and i'm sure thats not how it works. My name used to be on the account, but its been such a long time ago that i do not remember the account number or anything like that. Basically I would like to be able to better keep track of where and what the money is being put towards

Hi Jesse,

To change your representative payee, you will have to make an in person appointment with your local SSA office. If possible, the process will be easier if you can have your ex-wife present at the meeting.

IF I OPEN MY ACCOUNT FOR DIRECT DEPOSIT FOR MY SSA & SSI AND PUT SOMEONE ELSE WITH MY ACCOUNT TO HELP ME... DUE TO THE FACT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO ANY OF THAT, AND SHE GOES TO BANK TO WITHDRAW MONEY FOR ME AND TAKES MONEY OUT AND DOES NOT GIVE TO ME OR BEEN LYING TO ME ABOUT THE AMOUNT TAKEN. TELLING ME THAT WAS ALL I HAD AND WENT BY HER SELF AND NOT TAKE ME TO BANK WITH HER.WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS?

Hi Jose,

It sounds like you will need to change your representative payee. To do that it is best to make an appointment in person at your local SSA office with the person that you would like to help with your account.

A letter came to my Mom stating that she requested a new direct deposit account number and that the funds will be sent to the new account. My Mom did not make no such change. Something is wrong. How to move forward to inquire as to who made this request.

Hi Tess,

It sounds like you should contact the SSA as we are not affiliated with them! Their number is 1-800-772-1213. Or you can visit your local SSA office (make an appointment before you go!).

My Question is, is there a way I can stop my ssdi check from being directly deposited to the account I had set up for direct deposit? The reason is because there is a negative balance on my prepaid American Express bluebird card somehow and I don't want them to take it when my check comes in 13 days. I fought with American Express asking how a prepaid card can hold a negative balance and basically they just gave me the run a round and said the next time I fund my account there taking the money. Please any ideas on how I can stop this in 13 days even if I have to wait till the next month to get November's check I'd do it. Any ideas?

Hi Tony,

I am not sure how the AMEX card works, but if you would like to change the account that your money is deposited into, I would recommend talking to your local SSA office.

Hi Susie,

I would recommend making an appointment with your local SSA office. They will be able to see why that happened and there you will be able to clear up the correct account for any future payment. Make sure to bring all of the proper identification.

Hi Susan,

We're not affiliated with the SSA, so that is not something we would be able to help with. You can try calling the SSA to see if they are able to help.
