Qualifying children

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

My question is my childs father was approved for ssdi benefits 2 months ago. I am applying for my 6 year old daughter now. Will she receive back pay if so how far back will they go. And how long does it take for her to be approved

Hi there,
Your child may be eligible for back pay from the Established Onset Date of the father's disability, which is when the SSA decided that the father became disabled. I would not be able to say how long it would take as the SSA's processing and approval times vary from region to region.

Back in 2004 my daughters father got social security disability aND he just passed away in April of 2016 so I was told to file for death benifits when they were trying to do the application they ran into an issue saying that there was a claim open under her since 2004 and it had to be closed to move on I hadn't heard anything back from them so I called and the guy looked into what the claim was apparently there was an open claim because they had sent out an application to be filled out that I never received that she could have been getting a monthly check since 2004. I was a single parent and to find out that she was supposed to be receiving money and I had no idea made me sick and upset. My question is I know I can get her the death benefits but can I also get the money she was supposed to have been receiving since 2004? if so what should I do

Hi Jessica,
Your child may be eligible for back pay for the amount of time it takes from filing the claim to approval, unfortunately I am not sure if the SSA would count the application that you did not receive as a completed claim.

I have had full custody of my three children for the past nine years .I was unable to get any support from my exwife because she was unable to work and was on assistance and I just found out she is now getting ssi and they are back paying her for 6 years are my children eligible for benefits also?

My daughters father and I were never married. We separated when she was 8 months old. She is now 15. There was never any legal custody arrangements but I have always had sole custody and have never received child support. I did file for child support and an order was given that he pay $168 per month since March 25, 2015. I have not received anything from him and this is being handled by child support enforcement. He told me he filed for SS disability 2 years ago and was just awarded approval. He has told me and my daughter he has filed for her to receive benefits and that my daughter will receive back pay and a monthly check. I have two questions, first, will this money be sent to him or can a checking account be set up for my daughter and have it direct deposited. Secondly, he is in the rears $2800 in child support, will they take that money from his back pay and give to me for the back child support?

Hi Elizabeth,
The money may be sent to an account rather than having him receive and distribute it. Also, disability benefits generally may not be garnished for child support.

My son age 3 just got approved for disability since he is autistic. .I have two questions. .I have no income since December and get snap (food stamps) is this considered income although it will be reduced when I report it...also I am applying for his sibling who is autistic also..will my others son disability money be considered as income?

Hi Yoly,
It may not be as your son's SSI benefits may be considered his benefits rather than your income. As far as SNAP benefits are concerned, this will vary by state as some supplement SSI payments. I would contact your local SSA office regarding that.

My son is on ssdi and I was wondering if I can get paid to stay at home with him. My 14 yr old watches him while I work but he has become more defiant and aggressive latley don't really want to put that on her anymore not to mention safety reasons. If I put him in daycare they will call to pick him up like when he was there before

Hi Bernadette,
If your son needs constant care in that manner, you may be able to. I would contact your local SSA office, they may be able to point you in the right direction as far as those types of benefits are concerned.

My fiance is on sad he has 5 kids when the youngest one graduates what happens to that money his kids were getting? Does it revert back to him? If none of the kids go to college of course

Hi Gin,
Once the turn 18, regardless of their school enrollment, their benefits would stop, your fiance would no longer receive that money.

My husband has two daughters from a previous relationship. He has custody and they live with us full time. They are age 9, and 13. We recently found out their mother has been collecting disability. Any help would be amazing. How do we go about singing them up? Has she committed fraud by not putting them on it?

My grandson of 7yrs old receives a check from his dad being disabled n now his dad is incarcerated n I'm getting custody n does he continue to get a check, I also will be moving him to the state I live in?
