Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Terra,
Your child may not be eligible for the maximum amount of benefits based off the income and resources that they deemed to be available to your son through you.

My son is drawing disability, we are doing a dna to legal determine if his 9 month old son is his. If so can the child draw ssi and is he eligible for it from h I s day of birth. My son was on disability then.

If my son beats Lymphoma &Leukemia Cancer, will they discontinue his Disability &if he gets it again in the long run, would I have to reapply to get him back on Disability?

Hi Felicia,
I pray that he does! Regarding discontinuing his benefits, it would really depend on if the SSA decides that his condition has improved enough for them to change his eligibility. If he has a relapse ( knock on wood!) you can make a request for benefits to be reinstated for five years from the month that he stopped receiving benefits.

I am the representative payee for my minor child's SSI benefits. She just turned 17 and found out she is pregnant. Does anyone know if her benefits can be used to purchase items such as furniture, clothing and necessities for the baby? She will give birth before she turns 18 and she will still be receiving benefits at that that time. I don't see why she wouldn't be able to, but I am not sure. Currently, she is not working, and she is a full-time high school student who will be starting her senior year soon. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
that's a great question! Generally benefits can be used for the maintenance and improvement of a beneficiary's condition. I'm not entirely sure about furniture, clothing and necessities for the child, but it may be a good idea to check in with the representative handling your child's SSI case, they would be able to go into detail about what you would be able to purchase.

Hi Renee,
I would start by contacting the SSA at 1-800-772-1213, they would be better able to determine the children's eligibility.

My daughter has terminal cancer. I pay child support , even though I have half custody of my two children. How do I find out of my X is receiving SS benefits for my daughter?

Hi Patrick,
I'm sorry to hear about that! However, you would only be able to get that sort of the information from the SSA if you had the written permission of your ex to obtain it.

Hi Vickie,
I am sorry for your loss!
You may not have to wait for all his children to have applied, and generally, if a child is able to inherit property from the deceased, then they may be eligible for benefits.

Hi Melissa,
I'm not entirely sure, but generally children may be eligible for back pay from SSDI if they are on the initial application for benefits.
