I am 4' 11" tall and i am wondering if I qualify for disability?

I am 30 years old and stand 4' 10". I wear hearing aids in both ears and have a severe back pain. It is hard for me to find work because of my height and because I don't hear well. My hearing is moderate but getting worse. Would I qualify?

Hi Marsha,
Height alone is not the criteria for disability. If you height or any medical complications from your height result in the inability to earn more than $1,130 a month, then you may be eligible for benefits.

Hi there,
You might grow more, don't worry! Also, "midget" is not really the correct term, many people find it offensive, and people of smaller statures don't really refer to themselves as such.

My daughter is aphakic but uses corrective lenses. She is 4'11". Has mild learning disabilities. Is there anything to apply for to help with her college expenses.

Depending on the severity of her condition, she may be eligible for SSI benefits based off of her income and financial resources.

Hi there,
We would not be able to say as determining if someone has dwarfism requires medical expertise we do not have. However, height is only one of the criteria for disability benefits, it is not the deciding factor.

My grandson is 15 months old and has achondroplasia (dwarfism). Has had spinal stenosis surgery and has sleep apnea. Still not walking at 15 months. Is on Medicare. The dwarfism was confirmed via genetic testing and obvious features. Given his age is there a possibility he would qualify for SSDI?

Hi Jim,
Unfortunately, SSDI is the program for disabled workers and requires a work history. However, he may qualify for SSI depending on his parent's income and resources.

Thanks for the reply. If and when both parents are working they are in the $50-$60k income are with three kids plus one from a previous marriage so there is child support. So not sure that would be worth a try.

You would qualify for benefits if you could show that your height, and the health complications that come with it, make you unable to work.
