Direct Deposit

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I currently receive SSI for my middle son, it comes to me in the form of a check. How do I get this to be direct deposit into my checking account?

How far ahead do I need to let Social Security know that I'm changing bank accounts so that I am sure that that gets in there

Hi Will,

I would not count on that quick of a turn around. Make sure that your old account is still open so you can receive your money. You can always call the SSA to confirm your details. I would expect the account to be switched by the following pay period.

I do not have a checking account. Can my disability check be direct deposited into someone else's bank account? And can my student loans be taken out of someone else's account.

Hi Tracey,
Generally, if you do not have a checking account, the SSA may issue you a debit card where they deposit the benefits. I'm not really sure how your student loans would work.

Hello my bank acct was closed for which I get my benefits too. The bank said they sent the money back to social security. Does ssi automatically send you a check after trying to deposit to a closed acct. and how long does this process take

Hi Barbara,
the SSA does not issue physical checks any longer, they generally use a debit card or direct deposit to distribute funds. I'm not entirely sure how long the process would take exactly, as it will vary with how fast the SSA is able to process the benefits and return it to you.

Hi Kathren,

If you have chosen to receive your payments by direct deposit to a bank, credit union account, or Direct Express Debit MasterCard card account, you can call the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center at 800-333-1795 for more assistance. Hope this helps!

Hi Charlie,
You may find it deposited in your account around the same time, though bank processing times do vary.
