What do I do if I want to change banks & have direct deposit?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I am just wondering how I get the paperwork? Who do I call?

Hi Barbara,
Once you have your new account set up, contact the SSA and let them know you wish to change your direct deposit information. Once you update it, wait until you receive funds in your new account to close your old account, as they may deposit the next month's benefits in your old account.

This is what the people at the Social Security office told me to do. I opened my new account and gave the routing and acct number to them and it took 2 months to start getting my direct deposit to my new acct. So then I closed my old acct. and everything worked out fine. So just open your new acct. give them the info they need and wait for the deposits to hit your new acct. then close your old acct.

Hi Joe,
You may want to go to the bank, they can provide you with the banking information that you would need for updating your direct deposit information.

I am currently representative payee for my brother. Want to make his son representative payee. What happens to the money in the current account? I want to make sure my brother retains those funds. Is it possible to use the same account and just change the name on it to his son once he has been named representative payee?
