Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Shawnee,
I'm very sorry for your loss.
They may be eligible for SSI benefits if they meet the income and resource limits for it, however they may be eligible for SSDI auxiliary benefits based off of your work record as well.

I have been receiving SSI and I have children. I started receiving it 4yrs ago and I have sole custody of my children. My two oldest their father passed away and my youngest son is now 10 yrs. Are my children eligible for benefits and if so, is it to late for me to start getting benefits for them ? And How ?

My daughters father was only 25 yrs., old when he passed so he didn't not work enough into social security. However, with me having ssi benefits are they eligible as well ?

I've adopted my 19 month old granddaughter. I've had her since birth. I collect disability. I know she can collect half my check. But considering back pay, how far will that go back. The full 19 months ?

My husband havehad legal guardianship from the courts of my nephew since he was 2 months old.. He is almost 13. We have claimed him on our taxes every year. He is on our food stamp case and our medical card, but we cannot get cash assistance because he's technically our nephew. We don't know where his biological uterus donor is and there was no man listed on the birth certificate. It's never been an issue before. We've always been mom and dad. My husband is in the middle of his ssdi application and we don't know if our "son" will qualify as a child or not. And also I found out yesterday I have CTE/early onset dementia at 44 and not enough work credits to get ssdi so will have to apply for ssi so will I qualify to get partial Benifits?

Hi Sarah,
Unfortunately I would not be able to say as I do not know the particulars of your case, however, if you meet the income and resource limits for SSI, and are otherwise eligible, you may be able to be awarded SSI benefits.

We applied for SSD for my husband. We received a letter in regards to benefits for my son. Does that mean my husband is approved? Also my son comes and visits but doesn't live with us. He wouldn't qualify anyway, correct?
