Qualifying children

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

My brother recieved ssi, and my dad passed and now he receives rsdi child benefits. He was supposed to get it in 2005 to now but didnt. Is he able to receive the back pay?

Hi Jamie,
Sorry to hear that. I believe that you are only eligible for survivors' benefits from the time at which you apply, so if your brother did not apply under your father's account at the time of your father's passing, he would not be eligible for back pay.

So I'm 19 And I Don't Know Anything About Ssi But That My Mom Was Getting Money For Me. they Sent Me A Letter On May 31st Saying That They Reviewed My Case And Still Find Me Disabled therefore I Don't Need A Disability Hearing?! So When Do You Think My Payments Start Coming Coming

Debra,
If you are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your child will not be eligible for any additional benefits as the SSI program does not cover dependent benefits.
If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) you can apply for benefits for your child be contacting the Social Security representative that handles your case. He or she will determine if your child is eligible and what documentation you will need.

Your children will automatically be sent checks if you listed them on your application.

I included my children on my app and as sole custodian! And NO they didn't include them automatically I still had to do phone interview to add them to case! So NO it doesn't always happen automatically!

My husband included my daughter but had to do all info ourself and was told by his lawyer they did NOT do that we had to but they received a third of her payment... How wrong is that!!!!!!

I am curre5dealing with the very same issue. My application in July 2016 included my two minor childre. I was approved October 2016, and in December I had to do ANOTHER application for my two sons, and we are still waiting in a payment letter and funding for them as of April 17, 2017. How long does it usually take when they were listed on my application initially?

Lisa, The money actually needs to follow the child. Since it is intended to feed & shelter the child it would stay with the child. Both social security & attorneys have stated this. You need to fill out a payee representative of who the child is living with .. Whoever is providing the "food & shelter ". Usually this is a biological parent - step parent or grandparent. Make sure to do this I have heard of cases where after social security found out ... The parent had to pay back
