Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi there,
It depends on which type of benefits you receive. If you receive SSDI, you would receive only one lump sum. If you receive SSI, then you would get multiple installments six months apart.

I was approved for SSDI last June with a back payment calculated to $60k, which I haven’t received yet. I was recently approved for SSI back also for the amount of $21k. My question is how will they distribute these funds? I’ve been surviving with the help of a friend for the last 3 years and although he’s been patient, he would like to be reimbursed. I understand that if one’s back pay is too high they break the SSI payments into installments and withhold the SSDI. Is this true?

Hi Christopher,
SSI is based on income and financial resources, so you may become ineligible for those benefits based on your SSDI back pay and award. You may be able to pay your friend back with the funds from your back pay.

Hi Bryan!

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I think I didn’t properly present my question. I was awarded back pay for both SSDI and SSI. SSI is broken up into 3 installments. Will that affect my SSDI back pay? Or will I still get the SSDI in one lump sum payment?

Hi Christopher,
SSI would come in three installments and your SSDI back pay may come as one lump sum.

Hi There,

I am so sorry to hear that. You may be able to use it, but you should double check with the SSA first to be safe. Condolences to you and your family.

I went out on LTD with MetLife in 2014 for cancer and complications while my son was 16. I was finally in 2017 approved for SS disability benefits. Since my son is now 18; SS sent the back pay (25k) directly to him in his name. Now MetLife sent me a bill which includes the 25K they sent to him. I can send them the $$ SS sends me but my son and his dad (estranged relationship with his dad) called SS and they were told that the $25K belongs to him and he’s not required to reimburse anyone (neither MetLife nor me). Now, MetLife informed me that I am responsible for paying them back the $$$they sent him but I don’t have that money and he refuses to sent it to them or me and believes I am trying to steal from him. All I want to do is pay MetLife back but I can’t give them $$$ I personally never received or had/have access to or have money to pay them. I can’t pay my existing expenses on my SS benefits. How can MetLife expect me to reimburse them $$ they never sent me and for something that had it been paid timely would have been paid to me but because the delay and my son now being 18 they sent to him which he decided to keep.

Hi BB,
I'm sorry to hear about that! You may be obligated to pay, you may want to refer to your LTD policy regarding this.

I have full custody of my daughter and my ex just started receiving SSDI. Due to this, my daughter was awarded approximately $30,000 in back pay. My ex owes this money back to the long term disability company. Although I did receive child support during each month from the LTD company, I did not sign the agreement with the LTD company. Can the judge force we to pay back the lump sum?
