How Can I Stay Afloat While Waiting for Social Security Disability Benefits?

Submitted by Chris on

Are you struggling to make ends meet? Are you asking yourself if you should file for unemployment or Social Security disability benefits? The disability application and review processes are time consuming. If you’ve been denied benefits and can't work then the wait can be even longer, as you will need to file an appeal. Making ends meet while you wait for a decision can be challenging. There are resources available for you to help you stay afloat and earn income while waiting for disability approval. Here are some tips to help you get through while waiting for Social Security disability.

Tips on What To Do For Income While Waiting For Disability

Tip #1: Work While Waiting For Social Security Approval

If you are wondering how to survive while ssd-benefits-and-money-imagewaiting on disability benefits, you may be happy to learn that you can work while you wait for your benefits. However, it is important to note that, while it is possible to work and also file for Social Security disability benefits, it is a tricky matter. Any work you do must not be the type or volume that will disqualify you for benefits. Additionally, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has two types of disability benefits for which you may apply. Each program has its own financial eligibility thresholds.

  • With Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you cannot earn more than what is considered “substantial gainful activity” or SGA. For 2024, SGA is set at $1,550 per month.
  • With Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you cannot have significant income or other assets, as this is a need-based program. Only certain income and assets count toward eligibility and the calculation of countable income and assets is complex.

Any income from employment is likely to put your eligibility for SSI at risk, but income from employment may or may not affect SSDI eligibility. A disability advocate or attorney can help you understand how working in particular kinds of jobs or a certain number of hours may affect your eligibility.

Tip #2: Apply for Other Types of Support While Waiting For Disability

While you wait for disability benefits to be approved, consider seeking assistance through other local, state, and federal support programs. These may include:

  • Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Short term or temporary disability benefits are also available in a few states, including California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

Your home state may have additional programs for which you may qualify. The local family social services office or Department of Social Services is the place to start. A social worker with one of these agencies will be able to assist you in completing applications for any programs available to you.

Tip #3: Find Other Sources of Support or Financial Assistance

Keep in mind that you may have other sources of financial assistance you can tap into while you wait for benefits.

  • If you own a home, you may be able to refinance or take out a home equity loan.
  • If you have friends or family who are willing and able to help, consider accepting their assistance.
  • You may be able to borrow against or cash out a 401k or life insurance plan.

These types of measures may seem extreme, but your financial circumstance may make it necessary for you to take aggressive steps to ensure you’re able to get by while you wait for disability benefits.

BEWARE:

Can I Get Unemployment Benefits and Social Security Disability?

NO. Unemployment benefits are a source of income for any people who find themselves without work, but these benefits are often not a practical solution for people awaiting a disability determination from the SSA. This is because Unemployment is a program for people who expect to be able to work at some point in the near future. Disability benefits on the other hand are designed for people who anticipate being unable to work for a year or longer.

These programs fundamentally contract one another, so even an application for Unemployment may cause you to be denied disability benefits. In addition, if you are eventually approved for disability benefits and your recently received Unemployment benefits, then you may end up having to pay back any Unemployment payments you received.

Speeding up the Disability Application and Review Processes

To a certain extent, the time it takes to get a decision on your disability claim is time-and-moneyout of your hands. However, having a disability attorney on your side can make the process of applying and appealing run more smoothly. A disability attorney can help you build a stronger and clearer claim for benefits too, which in turn can lead to a faster approval. Additionally, it could be said that working with a disability attorney can be one of, if not, the best ways and/or signs your disability claim will be approved—in theory.

My sister in law was approved

My sister in law was approved, she has terminal cancer, Glioblastoma. They said she has to wait the 6 months before payment starts in January. She may not make it that long. What can be done to get payment sooner? What happens if she passes before they receive any payments?

Hi Laura,

Hi Laura,

In certain cases one can be approved for expedited payments from the SSA.

I am so sorry to hear that. If she passes away before getting approved for Social Security, her spouse or children (if she has any) may be eligible to receive survivor's benefits.

I am a single woman in her

I am a single woman in her late 30s with physical and mental health disabilities. I see a therapist, psychiatrist, pain management doctor, a GP and a case management professional each month. The medical issues I have are too long of a list to add in the comment section. I have two disability cases open at the moment. My attorneys recommended I proceed with an appeal for the first disability claim that was denied. All appeal processes were exhausted in this first disability case on the state level. My attorneys were so confident that it should have been approved they recommended I appeal at the federal level. I did not have the $500 for the Federal filing fees, so my attorneys paid the filing fees for me. They of course expect to be reimbursed at some point. They then filed a second disability case on the state level again, so I have two cases open at the moment. My issue is difficulty with finances. I am at the end of the road with any help. My family have all passed away, I am single, I have one individual who does help with rent, but this month is the last month she'll be able to help. I do understand her position. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on programs I could apply for any financial assistance for rent, utilities, prescription costs and a $70 per month car payment. I was so close to being evicted this month. If anyone has any suggestions for any financial assistance programs for a single person without a child in the state of Kansas I'd greatly appreciate any information. Thanks so much.

A few years ago I also fractured my back I feel deserve more than I was granted from disability is anyone aware of any help I could possibly get to maybe receive an additional meal everyday atleast?

I have severe to profound hearing loss in both ears and brain infected by German Measles at birth, Wernicke's Aphasia (receptive aphasia) has affected my whole life. Now have Meniere's Disease since 2011. After working full-time over 32yrs. Lost my job, I filed for disability Nov 2017 because no matter how hard I tried, I always fail and I'm just tired of fighting and trying to be 'normal', a hard working class citizen. I am in my 50s now, single, and broke. I am stressed about rent and bills, just started doing Uber; without going over 1170/mo with 1bdrm apt 945/mo., really!!? I was blinded by a brain

I was blinded by a brain tumor in 2009 but was able to keep the job I had until 2017. I moved from the state I had my job in and so now I am un-able to get work. My disability claim (started in July of 2017) has reached the npoint where I went to see the various doctors to prove my disability and I just got a notice that states I was found disabled medically and now must wait for the "non medical" part to be decided on. I have no clue what any of this is or how long it will take. Like you I am trying topay for everything with what I have left and it will run out of too much time passes. I fear the worst but what can we really do? I hope everything pans out for all of the people who are disabled and need help!

I have been fighting for

I have been fighting for disability for over six years.

At this point, I am becoming homeless. I cannot work. I will be denied again - that's just how the system works.

I have exhausted all resources. I have no friends and family to help and HUD housing requires a minimum of $6k a year. It's infuriating - if I could make $6k a year I would be doing much better than I am now.

I am in overwhelming pain. I am destitute. The SSI program has abjectly failed me.

I have decided to kill myself in May.
I already know I will be denied again. I will kill myself after the denial... I will write a letter to local news and the state SSA to let them know my death is 100% at their hands. They have driven me destitute and now into homelessness.
I will kill myself after I send the letters.

It will change nothing, of course. We disabled applicants aren't people to the SSA. We aren't even human. We're just numbers, abstract case files. The SSA could care less about the lives they destroy with repeated denials.

I can only hope my death will force change, though I overwhelmingly doubt that will happen.

Made drastic changes...no cable no house phone, just internet and cell. I'm sick anyways.. I meet my friends at Church and go to the doctor once a week.
