Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

My ex applied for and received ssdi. Our daughter is also to start receiving a monthly benefit of $300. He owes me back child support of $8000. Will I receive part of his lump sum and will our daughter get a lump sum from when he filed?

My fiancé and I have been together for 8 years but we just mention each other as husband and wife although Alaska is not one of the common law marriage state, we have a 4 year old son and he has a 11 year old daughter from previous relationship who, where she stays with us 50% of the time, my husband has pancreatic cancer due to that he only has so much time left. My husband-fiancé, wanted to know if I can apply for his daughters survivorship benefits (besides his daughters mother, she will still be visiting and staying over with her brother even after) besides our son and my survivor ship benefits for taking care of his son since we are not legally married. What are our choices? The maximum family benefit survivor
Ship is $3600, my fiancé has our son and me, his daughter and the daughters mother. Will his ex receive equal benefits as ours ? 4 people claiming survivorship benefits

Hi Liz,
I am so sorry to hear that! His kids will be eligible and if you are their caregiver you can be in control of those funds, but I unfortunately do not believe you can receive spousal benefits as a widow unless you are married. His ex will be able to receive benefits, but they WILL NOT affect the ones you receive if you are caring for the children.

I recently won my social security disability case. When I applied in 2014, my son was in high school. I am looking for the form to fill out to take to the Social Security. Can you help me find it.

I wanted to apply for Social security benefit for my child who's currently under my primary care. He's turning 3 yr old. I am divorced and my child live with me. Do my ex-spouse or his mother (Grandmother) would qualify to apply for my son even if he's under my care? My ex-spouse and I had an agreement that he will claim my son for his tax return. Does it matter?

Hi Lynn,
They would be able to apply for benefits for your child, however as the child is under your care they may contact your regarding being a payee for your child's benefits.

My granddaughter lives with me.... her granddad and myself have temporary custody as she can not live with either parent as they are divorced. She is 15. Her dad starting receiving disability last year and someone told me that she should be eligible for benefits. If this is true, what would we need to do to get her set up.

Hi there,
You may want to contact your local SSA office, they would be able to help guide you through the process of applying for your grandchild.
