Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

I was adopted at the age of 7 my mother passed from cancer when I was 9. My sister was receiving SSI for me but I never knew until I was 17, and a senior in high school. I wasn't staying with her and when I found out she was receiving checks for me I got them put into my name. They stopped 6 mo after I did though.... recently I was told I could get pack pay for it when I turned 30.Ive never heard of this before but am curious if its true or not

Hi Ty,
You may have to make arrangements with your sister to receive those funds, I'm not entirely sure how you would receive that money based on turning 30.

My child has Type 1 Diabetes and we were told that she can not receive SS, so we are applying for Medicaid. As her mother can I receive any benefits for taking care of her with her life-long illness?

Hi Danielle,
I really could not say as programs vary by state, however you may want to contact the office in your state that handles disability benefits.

Hi there,
Yes, you may be able to be claimed as a dependent, as SSI eligibility may not affect that.

Hi Susan,
They should not be eligible--If you adopted them after your husband passed away, they will not be eligible under his record. I am very sorry for your loss.

I've been on disability since 1990. I've had my grandson since he was born. I have guardianship of him but have not adopted him because his mother won't allow it. Is there any way I can get benefits for him based on my disability. He's now 13 and it sure would help.

Hi Dee,

Your grandson may qualify to be a dependent based on your disability. If you have specific questions about your case you can call the SSA toll-free at 1-800-772-1213.

Best Wishes,
Eric

Hi there,
You may want to collect things that establish that you are responsible for the child's care, such as receipts for purchases made for the child, documents from their school, birth records indicating your parentage, adoption records, and other documents that indicate that you are the child's parent.

Hi Sue,
Your daughter may be eligible for benefits based on your work record, and she may be eligible for back pay based on that.
