Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi Melvin,
If you're entitled to back pay, it generally takes about four months from when you start receiving monthly benefits for it to arrive.

I'm on disability. My mom is my payee. She cashed my backpay check gave it to my father when mad at me. He and his wife stole the cash I was homeless so the backpay was to get me on my feet now I have nothing. What do I do

Hi Kejuan,
I'm sorry to hear about that! You may want to contact the SSA to have them assign another representative payee for you.

I've been approved for SSDI (received a payment for back pay into my checking acct. on 1/13/17) but haven't yet gotten the formal award letter yet. I'm just curious as to what the letter will say. Can anyone provide some insight?

Hi Cindy,
It may have some identifying information, as well as some specifics about your award, including what program you have been approved for and details about your case.

my boyfriend had a bleeding stroke in 12/2010, the case workers at the hospital helped to apply for disability for him .he was hospitalized for 4 months. He was approved for benefits and the first payment was 6/2011. But my question is.... does he qualify for back pay from when it first got applied for, if so he never received back pay and it has been 6 years. I had to borrow money to pay his mortgage for the 4 months so he would have a home to come back to.

Hi Dee,
Your boyfriend may be eligible for back pay from the time of his Established Onset Date, which is when the SSA considered his to be disabled.

I'm due back payments for ssdi approval..however, they claim I have an over-payment when was receiving checks before. I made monthly arrangements to pay it back. My question is will they take my current back payments owed at 100% or continue with agreement out of the back pay due?

My son was just approved for ssi in Dec 2016. How long will it take to start receiving his back pay as I am trying to buy a vehicle to transport him to doctor appointments and school. Would I qualify for an emergency advance?

Hi Latraneice,

I am so sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to this question. It may take some time to receive your Social Security back pay, especially if you were awarded your disability benefits at a disability hearing by a federal judge.

As for qualifying for an emergency advance, I would recommend following this link to see if your son would qualify for such:https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-expedite-ussi.htm

Best Wishes,
Eric

Hi Carrie,
Both SNAP and Medicaid are state-administered programs so their rule and guidelines vary by state. You may want to contact the offices in your state that handle either program.
