Using an RFC When Applying For Disability Benefits With Cirrhosis

If you have cirrhosis, you have a condition where the liver does not function as it should because it has suffered long-term damage. Usually, it is a disease that slowly develops. It has debilitating symptoms.

If you are unable to work because of cirrhosis, but your condition does not meet the criteria of a Blue Book listing, you may still be able to qualify by providing a residual functional capacity (RFC) completed by your physician. This RFC will detail what you are able to do and what you are unable to do, as well as your limitations and restrictions.

How To Use the RFC When You Have Cirrhosis

You will want to use the RFC to your benefit in your disability claim, so you will want to make sure the doctor explains how you are affected and how you are limited. As an example, you have worked retail your entire career and you are now 58 years old. Your RFC should indicate how the cirrhosis affects your work abilities.

As an example, because of the edema and pain caused by the swelling, you cannot stand for more than 30 minutes. You cannot walk without the help of a walker, and because of the pain and fatigue you cannot work for more than an hour without a rest break.

The medications you take for the cirrhosis causes nausea and it also causes mood swings and problems with your memory. You are not able to concentrate, and you cannot remember how to process transactions or where items are located. You can no longer work retail, and based on your symptoms, you cannot do other work.

Answer every question fully and do not just leave one-word answers or put non-applicable. You will also need to provide supporting medical documentation to support your claim, such as exam notes that confirm the diagnosis, test results, treatment records, and any other supporting medical records.
