Qualifying children

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

When i applied i was told a couple weeks. We are in a bad financial situation. 14 years of no support. Is there ever situations where people really do recieve in a couple weeks?

Hi there,
You may be eligible for benefits, but the SSA take their time if they do not know that your situation is dire. You may want to contact the SSA with documentation of dire need, for example a past due utility bill or eviction notice.

Hi. I just found out my daughters father is recieving benefits. I put tge application in on thursday and was told that day that she qualifies. When should we get her first check.

Hi There,
I applied for SS Disability in 2014 and was just recently approved for Disability. I was told my son being that he was 16 at the time when I applied will also get back pay. I know minors are eligible on their parent disability up until they are 18. I just received my Back pay but nothing was mentioned about my sons back pay....My attorney said even though he is an adult now he will still get backpay up until he turned 18. is it included with my backpay or is it paid out separately? Being that I didn't hear anything about it should I call social security to inform them about it?

The SSA will send an award letter for both of you, you may want to check to see if you had received one for him.

Hi I just got guardianship of my great nephew. I'm medically retired from the state of California also I get social security disibility. Is my nephew eligible for any benefits under me? Both parents are incarcerated.

I'm in the process of a claim for my son, when I spoke to the case worker last month and she said that my son will receive a paper check for October, if she tells me he's receiving help, then they should help him right?

Hi Tiffany,
You may want to confirm what your child is receiving with the SSA, and you may want to watch out for an award letter in the mail if it was determined that he would be eligible for benefits.

What is the cut off age when one of the parents are approved for ssdi,also do they split equally any back pay with. The children. Especially if parents have never married or been married mote than and divorced. Your help is much appreciate to clrar some midd conceptions

My son is 14 and currently receiving SSI. However, it was just discovered that his urine drug screening was positive for THC. Might he lose his benefits for this?

If it's not something that makes his condition worse or had contributed to his condition, it may not affect his benefits.

I collect disability currently, it's for mental illness, I have an adopted child who is 18 now and all judgement aside, I do desire to have a child of my own, I'm afraid of a few things, will I lose my benefits because I planned for a child? I'm not married and don't want to be married, I'm nearing forty and want the chance to be a mother to a biological child, I can't be sure if I can have kids or even handle the stress and responsibility as well. I will weigh these odds when the time comes, I'm not even expecting for any future children to receive benefits, I just worry I will become ineligible because the logic can be seen that if you can handle raising a child means you can handle having a job. I can't handle a job, I can no longer drive and my disability makes it almost impossible to leave home and my life is limited to my home, is it a reason to lose my benefits?

Hi Lynn,

Those reasons alone won't cause you to lose your SSI. The most common reasons for losing SSI are: going above the SGA limit, going back to work and changes in living situation, such as getting married, entering a nursing home etc.
