Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi there,
They may only be eligible for back pay if they were eligible at the time of the parent or guardian's application for benefits.

HI, my son has been receiving benefits from his fathers disability for over a year, he won a case in February for back pay for for more years, we haven't heard anything on when that money will be coming in. How long does it normally take to receive if we already get monthly deposits?

If a child stays with the biological mother and has never lived anywhere else can the grandmother who is the child's father who gets ssi use her address to get benefits started for the child?

Hi there,
In that situation, no, as the child may not be eligible for benefits based off of the grandparent if that was the case.

Hi Wayne,
I am sorry to hear that. If you believe of any suspicious activity you can call the SSA and give them a report: 1-800-772-1213

Best of Luck,
Eric

Hi there,
You may want to contact your local SSA office, as family law varies by state and I really could not say if you would be required to report these payments or if they would affect your benefits.
