Lump sum back payment

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi Bonnie,
This is actually not up to the SSA to decide. Child Services handles child support. Some SSI recipients have to pay a portion of their SSI payments to children, and some do not. It all depends on what your family court determines.

Hi Pamela,
You should get your first SSI payment shortly, so I would recommend saving it and parcelling it out monthly to pay off those bills until you receive your next installment.

Hi Randy,
You will unfortunately need to wait another 6 months for your next back pay installment. The only times these are expedited is if you have a dire medical need for doctors' payments.

Hi Rose,
They will need you to have a bank account because all SSDI/SSI payments are made electronically now, but the SSA will also set up some recipients with debt cards to use to spend the funds.

Hi Rose,
The SSA does not check your credit, You should bring any medical records that you have and all your financial information. Many people are denied after their first application, so it may be a good idea to speak with a disability advocate or attorney, as they can help you through the process of appeals. If you fill out the form here:
http://www.disability-benefits-help.org/form/free-disability-evaluation
We can have one reach out to you.

Hi Rose,
If you refiled for SSI in July, you will not be entitled to any back pay. This is because SSI back pay starts from the most recent date of your application, not when you became disabled.
