hi, i'm just below 4' 10" at 25. i was diagnosed with DDD recently after learning i had a circumferential bulge and a broad based protrusion touching one of my nerve roots. i was also diagnosed with ptsd, anxiety and depression. sciatica too. i didn't think much of it at first since i was getting PT and medication but i'm starting to notice more and more nerve issues i think since i stopped PT due to inability to cover co-pays. my feet/hands and even my thigh and inner elbows have started to hurt more. feels like a stabbing, stinging burning pain in my toes/fingers and inner elbows feel like they were punched pretty badly at times. sometimes i feel weak in the legs and tired. my lower back aches. i've been out of work for 6 months and i worry pretty badly about being able to perform if/when i go back to work, i don't want to damage my back more. i'm a DV survivor and am trying to get therapy too. would anyone think that i would possibly qualify? thanks!

Hi V.,

Qualifying may be tough. You may medically qualify. To find out, consult the SSA's Blue Book with your doctor to see if you meet the SSA's guidelines for DDD. Check listing 1.04 (disorders of the spine). The tough part will be the technical qualifications. You will need to have obtained enough work credits (check here: ssa.gov/planners/credits.html) to qualify for SSDI. Or you'll need less than $2,000 in assets to qualify for SSI.

Hi There,

Your height alone does not qualify for disability benefits. You'll need to meet a Blue Book listing for a condition you are experiencing as well as be unable to work for at least 12 months.

Hi Alma,

Not for your height alone, but it's possible you could be for your diabetes/nerve damage if both of those prevent you from being able to work full time.

Hi Zachary,

Your height alone won't qualify your for disability benefits. If you have another condition that will force you to be out of work for at least 12 months, you could qualify for disability benefits then.

Hi There,

If you are simply 4'11" and have no other physical ailments that will force you to be out of work for at least 12 months, you will not qualify for SSDI benefits.

Hello,

Not for your height. But if your other conditions will force you to be out of work for at least 12 months, then you could qualify for social security disability benefits.

Hi Rhonda,

Your height won't be a qualifying factor. The other conditions you are experiencing may qualify you. I would take a look at the SSA's Blue Book with your doctor to see if the conditions you are experiencing qualify. Good luck!

Hi There,

You'll need to see if you meet the Blue Book listing for bipolar disorder. You and your doctor should look over the Blue Book together to see if you qualify. You'll also need to either have enough work credits or have a household income below the SSA's limit.
