CAN I WORK AND STILL RECEIVE SSDI?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I RECEIVE SSDI DUE TO A PERMANTLY DISSABLED RIGHT ARM AND HAND (THAT IS WHY I TYPE IN ALL CAPS, I.E., ITS EASIER); I HAVE SEVERE BACK PAIN AND I HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN NECK (FRACTURE OF C5 & C6). I STILL WANT TO WORK THOUGH... DOING WHAT, I DON'T KNOW. CAN I WORK AND RECEIVE SSDI AND IS THERE AN INCOME LIMIT? GRANT FROM GEORGIA.

Hi Marci,

Yes, you definitely need to report the income to the SSA.

The number of hours doesn't matter, as long as it doesn't exceed the substantial gain activity (SGA). The SGA for 2017 is $1,170/month or $1,920/month if you are blind.
Best Wishes,
Eric

I'm on soc sec disability and get 966 monthly now if I were to take a part time job how much can I bring home? Is the $1170 total or on top of my check?

Hi there,
You may be able to do so, however it may be a good idea to contact your local SSA office just to check in regarding any restrictions in working that you may have.

I am a functional disabled person. I was born with a spinal defect and was diangosed with hydrocephalus and I have a shunt in my head. I was thinking about applying for a job to work part time and I wanted to know how many hours can I work without having my SSI decrease or cut? 25hours?

Hi Anthony,
The SSA would modify your benefits based on income rather than hours, you would have a reduction of one dollar for every two that you make at work.

If I worked for 7 weeks above the SGA limit, but was then fired 5 days after explaining why I kept asking for accommodations (although of course they used a different excuse to fire me), then 5 days after I got fired- I received a letter in the mail saying that I was approved for ssdi... Will my failed attempt to work screw me? Also, I was told to just make sure to give all the details of what happened when they ask, but there's no need to report it yet since it was an unsuccessful work attempt anyway. Is this correct advice or will I get in trouble for not immediately reporting It? What could happen?

When I talked to a lady from ssa I was told that I could work a part time job and make 1,096 in a month if I make over that then my ssd would drop down but I also got told by a tax company that I couldn't make over $500 a month. Here is the odd part my mom called and talked to ssa cuz she was trying to get ssd and they told her that she can't make over 1130 a month and that includes her ssd so when we were talking I told her I got told differently that I can make up to 1096 and that wouldn't affect my ssd but she swears that I would only be able to make just over 300 a month. Please help and let know if I'm correct or she's correct.
